CITY OF ORANGE CHAPTER – HLAA

As of May 5, 2018, meetings are now 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Meetings start promptly at 10:00 am with socialization time before hand. Unless indicated otherwise, all meetings are held at the Mariposa Women’s and Family Center in Orange 812 W. Town & Country Rd., Orange, CA 92868 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – please refer to the website for exact meeting date. See our Find Us page for details and directions.

For those interested, we have lunch after the meeting at various local restaurants to socialize with old and new friends. We will announce the exact place before the close of each meeting.

2018

January 6th, 9:30 – 11:30 AM:  HAPPY NEW YEAR…Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above)Ring in the NEW YEAR — Callie Frye, Sensory Disability Advocate for Disability Rights California in the Outreach Unit will talk on effective communication under ADA: identify state and federal laws protecting those with hearing loss, understand your right to effective communication when dealing with public entities and public accommodations – all this and much more!! – get together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA.

February 3rd, 9:30 – 11:30 AM:  Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above) – Gary Dorf, representative of Oticon (a leading manufacturer of hearing aids) will present the products they have for hearing losscome see what’s new with Oticon and learn how their hearing aids help those with hearing lossget together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA.

March 3rd, 9:30 – 11:30 AM: Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above) – Vince Anderson, Fire Safety Specialist with the City of Orange Fire Department – will make a presentation about fire safety for the deaf and hard-of-hearing – get together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA.

April 7th, 9:30 – 11:30 AM: Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above) – Barb Velasquez, Assistance Dogs Program Manager/Instructor at the Sam Simon Foundation Assistance Dogs Program – she will speak about Assistance Dog Program for the deaf and hard-of-hearing – how do you apply and what training is involved; Kickoff for the Walk4Hearing will be on April 21 and we will discuss this- get together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA.

May 5, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above) – Better Speech and Hearing Month–Cynthia Gil-Santillan, Engagement Manager at Cochlear Americas – she will speak about Cochlear Americas cochlear implant and processors; two members of our chapter will share their hearing journeys; we will discuss the upcoming Walk4Hearing which will be held June 9th – get together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA.

June 2, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above) -We will have 2 speakers: Mr. Kyle Riley, Guest Services Coordinator at the Segerstrom Center from the Arts – Mr. Riley will speak on the accommodations for the deaf and hard of hearing in viewing live productions at the Segerstrom Center located in Costa Mesa.  Mr. Riley will bring a couple of tickets to a captioned performance  – a drawing will be held and a lucky winner selected AND Mr. Jason Keller of Caption Call phones will demonstrate their newest caption phone (these phones are free for people with hearing loss with a certification of the hearing loss by a doctor or audiologist); countdown to the Walk4Hearing – the walk will be held on June 9th – there will be a brief Planning Committee meeting directly following in the meeting room.

July 7 – 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above) – “Everyone into the Pool!” – But I wear hearing aids &/or cochlear implants – summer activities with hot weather pose certain precautions people with expensive hearing devices need to observe.  We will discuss how to have a great summer and keep our devices from being soaked by water or baked in the sun – CART will be provided – get together for lunch after the meeting TBA.

August 4, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above) – Getting to Know YOU – this meeting will focus on sharing our hearing journeys.  At our very first meeting 2 years ago we introduced ourselves and shared hour hearing loss stories.  Come prepared to share…and CARE!! – get together after the meeting for lunch TBA.

September 1, DARK — NO MEETING

October 6, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above) – Panel discussion on Cochlear Implants from members of our chapter who have 1 CI and 1 hearing aid (bimodal) and who have 2 CI’s (bilateral) – there will be a brief Planning Committee meeting directly after in the meeting room.

November 3, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above) – Ali Eier, M.S.D.E – audiologist with Advanced Bionics will discuss Aural Rehabilitation for Cochlear Implant recipients and those new to hearing aids.  Tips on learning to listen and various sources to utilize for aural rehab – get together after the meeting for lunch TBA.

December 1, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above)  Christmas Party – Celebrate the Holiday with a luncheon at Marie Calendar’s on Grand Street in Santa Ana (same place we had the party last year). Must RSVP by November 25th with a payment of $12.00 per person.

2017

December 2nd, 9:30-11:30 AM:  Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above)-Roberta Smith – will provide information about CTAP (California Telephone Acess Program) for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.  Also our Annual Christmas Party from noon to 2pm -meal at Marie Callendars on Grand Avenue in Santa Ana not far from our meeting place.  Dr. Brad Ingrao to give a brief saxophone concert of Christmas songs and there will be an optional gift exchange game (not to exceed $15); reservations of $12/person accepted at the chapter meeting.

November 4th, 9:30-11:30 AM – Mariposa Center, Orange, CA 92868 (address above):  Lawrence Rolon, Director of Disability Services at LAX – he will be speaking on services available to people with hearing loss and other disabilities at LAX – if you travel by plane this will provide timely and helpful information to put into use – get together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA

October 7th, 9:30-11:30 AM– Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above)Kristi Panek , Au.D. –  Dr. Panek is a young audiologist with hearing loss who will share her hearing loss journey and how it has impacted her career –get together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA

September 2nd, 9:30-11:30 AM – Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above):  RAP SESSION – Let’s start the fall off with rapping about our issues with hearing loss – share and care with friends & family – get together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA

August 5th, 9:30-11:30 AM – Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above)Bob Rennie, Vice Chairperson for HLAA City of Orange Chapter – The presentation will include what is an Over-the Counter Hearing Aid (OTC); What are PSAPs?; Why is HLAA supporting OTC Hearing Aids?; HLAA Fact Sheet in Support of Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids – Guest caption provider will be Kelly Moreau filling in for Saba McKinley who is away on a family cruise – get together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA

June 3rd,  9:30-11:30 AM – Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above)Meghan Crimmins, Au.D.-Cochlear Implant Consumer Specialist at Advanced Bionics will speak on the difference between a hearing aid and cochlear implant; what is new in cochlear implant technology at Advanced Bionics and the importance in aural rehabilitation with rehab resources- get together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA

May 6th, 9:30-11:30 AM – Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above)  – Dr. Brad Ingrao – Q & A with our chapter’s professional advisor – bring your questions about hearing loss, hearing aids, cochlear implants and all that JAZZ – get together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA

April 1st, 9:30-11:30 AM – Mariposa Center, Orange, CA  92868 (address above)- Lyra Repplinger, Southern CA Outreach Manager at MedEl will speak on the  Electric Acoustic Stimulation (EAS) system by MedEl that is designed to fit the unique needs of individuals with partial deafness get together for lunch after the meeting – details TBA
