We had a great kickoff event in Costa Mesa this weekend for our local Walk 4 Hearing event, held by the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) in communities across the nation. This year it occurs on Saturday June 6th at the Long Beach Marina. It’s a great way to raise awareness about hearing loss, an “invisible disability.” Did you know that over 48 million people in the US have a mild to profound hearing loss, and that, contrary to popular belief, over half of people with hearing loss are in classrooms and the work force? Hearing loss has become the third most common physical condition behind arthritis and heart disease, yet many people still don’t understand how to communicate with people with hearing loss.
In addition to visibility, the Walk 4 Hearing gives us a chance to raise funds that go directly towards advocacy, education, and support for people with hearing loss and their loved ones. For many of us with hearing loss, HLAA chapters have become like a second family to us. We love getting together with other people who have been there and can share their coping strategies and keeping us from falling into isolation and depression. Join our team, Marla’s People and 40% of funds raised go directly towards our chapter!
